Betting on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+21)
The 5-1 Wake Forest Deamon Deacons are one of the biggest football surprises this season. They are now just one win away from being eligible for a bowl game. If you are on that team, you can’t think about it too much because it’ll mess with your focus, but it’s too exciting not to. Saturday afternoon, Wake Forest will have a chance to get that crucial sixth win.
For them to grab that W, they’ll have to do more offensively. It’s hard to pin the QB for something when the team is winning, especially if he’s also gaining five yards per carry and has five rushing scores, but John Wolford has to do better than 165 passing yards per game. He has to be more active if they want to give Florida State a competitive game.
Freshman running back Cade Carney, who’s coming off a knee injury, has been quality in the run game, surpassing the 100-yard mark in two of his three games this season.
Defensively is where the Deamon Deacons show the most promise. Led by lineman Duke Ejiofor and linebacker Marquel Lee, the team has jumped in the tackles for loss and sacks category, ranking 26th and 16th in the nation, respectively.
Betting on the Florida State Seminoles (-21)
From head coach Jimbo Fisher, to DE Demarcus Walker, to QB Deondre Francois, to star RB Dalvin Cook, this Florida State team is one tough unit. Last week, they ground out another hard-earned victory, beating Miami, 20-19, after Walker blocked an extra-point attempt.
They have to be proud with their efforts against the ‘Canes, but we’re sure they’d prefer a much easier win, especially Francois, who got hit hard multiple times.
On offense, the Seminoles easily have the more productive QB, RB, and receiving corps. Francois, a first year starter (he redshirted last year), is putting up respectable stats (63-percent comp. rate, 260 YPG, 9-2 TD-INT). Cook, a future first-rounder in the NFL draft, is averaging 188 yards from scrimmage, gaining six yards per carry and 17 yards per reception. The junior back will enter the game gunning for a fourth consecutive 300-plus all-purpose yard performance
The defense, on the other hand, isn’t as impressive, as they are giving up 33 points per game and seven yards per play. Their two bright spots are Demarcus Walker (seven tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks) and DB Tarvarus McFadden, whose four picks are more than the whole Seminoles team combined.
Writer’s Prediction
