Betting on the Washington Huskies (3-0)
The Washington Huskies were one of the most hyped teams in the country heading into this season, and they’ve been able to meet those high expectations for the most part thus far. Granted, they didn’t face anyone of note in non-conference play, but they did go 3-0, winning their games by an average of 39 points. They’re 2-1 ATS on the season after they fell short of covering the 41.5-point spread against Portland State last weekend.
Sophomore Jake Browning has looked very impressive thus far. He’s currently leading the country in passer rating (206.9) and boasts a 12:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
Again, that was against nobodies, but he did put up comparably great numbers when he faced Arizona last year. As a true freshman, Browning torched the Wildcats for 263 yards and accounted for five touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) to lead the Huskies to a 49-3 home win.
Just about everyone in that Huskies team returns this year for their visit to Tuscon, particularly their excellent defense which limited Arizona’s offense to just 2.9 yards per play and forced four turnovers. This season, Washington’s defense is giving up just 3.62 yards per play, fifth-best in the nation.
Betting on the Arizona Wildcats (2-1)
Arizona lost its opening game of the season, 18-16, at home against BYU, but has since bounced back with back-to-back wins over Grambling State and Hawaii. However, the Wildcats are still 0-3 ATS after failing to cover any of those first three games.
The Wildcats lost starting quarterback Anu Solomon due to a knee injury after that BYU game, but Brandon Dawkins has filled in quite capably.
After a shaky start against Grambling State despite 320 total yards and three touchdowns (two rushing), the sophomore looked much better against Hawaii. He completed 16-of-21 passes for 235 yards and a passing touchdown, and added 118 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
That performance could be enough to keep his starting spot for the visit of Washington as Solomon continues to recover.
However, whoever starts at quarterback could be without star running back Nick Wilson alongside him in the backfield. Wilson had just two carries against Hawaii before exiting due to injury. Freshman J.J. Taylor filled in capably, though, rushing for 168 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown.
Injuries are also piling up for the Wildcats defense, which isn’t all that great even at full strength. The possible return of senior safety Tellas Jones, who’s missed the past two games with ankle injury, will help, but likely won’t be enough to sufficiently slow the Huskies down on that side of the ball.
Writer’s Prediction
Washington passes its first big test of the season with flying colors as the Huskies roll to a 35-21 win.
