Betting on the Washington Nationals (36-20)

Moneyline: -115

There’s no stopping the Washington Nationals, who kept their MLB-best record intact by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, 4-2, in their first rematch against one another since last year’s NLDS clash.

Washington has gone 8-2 over its last 10 games – all against teams from California – as the most well-rounded team in baseball had another complete performance. Gio Gonzalez pitched six innings of two-run, four-hit ball, while Anthony Rendon knocked a solo shot out of Dodger Stadium for his third home run and seventh run overall in his last 10 games. Rendon also has as many hits as his starts during that span.

Not only are the Nats tops in the majors in team batting average (.279) and runs scored (314), they also have a fantastic pitching corps backing up their bats.

Following Gonzalez’s start will be Max Scherzer (6-3, 2.56 ERA). The Dodgers will have an even taller obstacle to overcome this Tuesday, as the reigning NL Cy Young awardee has not lost his command from the mound whatsoever. Scherzer pitched a complete game of one-run ball against the Giants in his previous start, and has allowed just two runs and walked just two batters to go with his 24 strikeouts in his last 17.2 innings of work.

Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers (35-24)

Moneyline: +105

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ early-season inconsistency is starting to rear its ugly head again.

After their season-high six-game win streak in the final week of May, the Dodgers havee gone just 2-4 since. Those four losses have been pretty brutal, as they’ve combined to score just three runs in those contests, with two of those scores coming from Monday’s loss in the series-opener against the Nationals.

Only Adrian Gonzalez appears to be getting his groove back for Los Angeles. After an inpet start to his campaign, the five-time All-Star has 10 hits in as many games to go with five runs batted-in. But still, Gonzalez and his team can explode on offense in any given day, as they’ve still scored nine or more runs in three of their last nine contests.

The Dodgers will certainly need to get their bats a-popping this Tuesday, especially with Brandon McCarthy (5-2, 3.38 ERA) set to start in the second of their three-game homestand versus the Nats. Although McCarthy picked up the win in his previous start against the Cardinals, he lasted just four innings in that contest, leaving abruptly due to a blistered finger. Do note that the Glendale native has already dealt with knee and shoulder issues earlier this season.
