Betting on the Washington Redskins (+4.5)
The Alex Smith Era will commence this year for the Redskins, but Washington fans should expect getting served with a heavy dosage of Colt McCoy and Kevin Hogan in the preseason. The two backups will handle the job under center for the most part of these exhibition contests, beginning this Thursday, as Smith is locked as the starter. Running Chris Thompson will also not participate because of a more serious reason, as he continues to recovery from a fractured fibula he sustained last season. Instead, the Redskins will get a look at how rookie running back Derrius Guice will do when the bullets starts to fly. While there has been significant hype on Guice, the fact remains that he has yet to play a single down in a live NFL game setting. On defense, cornerbacks Fabian Moreau, Greg Stroman, Ranthony Texada, and Danny Johnson can use the preseason to work their way up in the cornerback pecking order. Texada and Johnson went undrafted this year, but some believe they should’ve been selected. They are out to prove they belong in the NFL with them currently with the Redskins.
Betting on the New England Patriots (-4.5)
It doesn’t matter if it’s just the preseason or not. At any rate and setting, the Patriots are always expected to succeed. Their first test this preseason comes against the Redskins at home, though, instead of Tom Brady, the Pats’ offense will be orchestrated under center by Brian Hoyer and Danny Etling. Hoyer might not see any action either, so the safest bet to take a snap of those three signal-callers is Etling, a former LSU Tiger quarterback who was selected 219th overall in this year’s draft. Elsewhere, the offensive line could generate even more intrigue in the preseason, as the left-tackle position remains without a definite starter. Trent Brown, Isaiah Wynn, and Joe Thuney are currently battling for that role, and it seems to be among the biggest positional battle taking place right now within New England. At age 41, Brady needs a better pass protection more than what he got in previous years. Another position that is still without clear-cut starter at the other defensive tackle slot. Lawrence Guy and Danny Shelton are currently the top competitors for that role.
Writer’s Prediction
New England wins, 27-21.
