Why Floyd Mayweather Jr. will lose to Conor McGregor

By all accounts, Floyd Mayweather Jr. should win his much-hyped boxing bout with Conor McGregor. “Money” is still undefeated inside the squared circle, and is currently installed as the big -650 favorite to overcome the MMA champion. However, there’s still a very real possibility that Mayweather loses his first ever boxing match at the hands of the Notorious one, and here are three reasons why.

Why Mayweather will lose to McGregor

He’s at an age and power disadvantage

Mayweather may be the greatest boxer of his generation, but he’s now 40 years old, so he’s some years removed from his athletic peak. And you’d have to wonder just how seriously he actually took his training camp against McGregor, a part-time boxer he should really be beating 10 times out of 10.

Mayweather hasn’t had the ability to end fights for some time now, so he might need to go do a decision to get the W against McGregor. (A Mayweather win via decision is priced at +165.) However, that will only give McGregor—the more powerful puncher of the two—more time to get lucky and land a shot that might earn him a famous win.

He’ll face an unorthodox foe

Mayweather is rightly considered the favorite since McGregor will be the one stepping into his sport. But maybe the fact that McGregor isn’t an orthodox boxer can play to his advantage. His movement and style due to his MMA background will be a slight departure from what Mayweather has been accustomed to facing over the course of his career, and may catch Money off-guard.

McGregor will also be the bigger fighter and could use that to his advantage by boxing a little dirtier to eventually wear the smaller and older Mayweather out.

$$$Rematch$$$

Mayweather-McGregor is widely anticipated to break all sorts of pay-per-view records – it’s priced at -600 to top the 4.6 million buys that Mayweather-Pacquiao did – and will make both fighters incredible amounts of money. So, is it completely inconceivable that McGregor pulls off the monumental to set up what should be an even more profitable rematch? Not entirely. Of course, this is merely unsubstantiated speculation, but with a sport as shady as boxing, it’s never wise to rule anything out.
