Super Bowl XLI

Date: February 4, 2007

Venue: Dolphin Stadium (Miami, Florida)

Attendance: 74,512

Result: Indianapolis Colts def. Chicago Bears, 29–17

MVP: Peyton Manning (QB, Indianapolis)

Recap: In a game as sloppy as the field itself, it was the Indianapolis Colts who found the composure in a rainy Super Bowl XLI to win over the Chicago Bears, 29-to-17. For the first time in the history of the Super Bowl two black coaches— Indianapolis’ Tony Dungy vs. Chicago’s Lovie Smith— were pitted against each other. With the Colts win, Dungy became the first black coach to win a Super Bowl.

How the game started was a Super Bowl first as well—Chicago return specialist Devin Hester ran back the opening kickoff for 92 yards and a touchdown for the earliest lead in Super Bowl history– the first time an opening kickoff was returned for a touchdown. But after the Bears led 14-to-6 late in the first quarter, the Colts rang up 16 straight points including three Adam Vinatieri’s field goals to take the lead. The Colts never gave up the lead and Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning notched his first Super Bowl title and Super Bowl MVP finishing with 247 yards on 25-of-38 passing and a touchdown.
