It was the Colts who started the scoring with a field goal and a touchdown in the first quarter for a 10-to-0 lead before the Saints responded with a pair of field goals in the 2nd to cut down the lead 6-to-10 at halftime. Then, right after the break, the improbable happened as the Saints successfully executed an onside kick—recovering the ball at the 42-yard line and stealing a possession away from the potent offense of Manning and the Colts. The first onside kick attempted before the fourth quarter of a Super Bowl started a 58-yard drive where Breese had five consecutive passes including a 16-yard touchdown to give the Saints the lead, 13-to-10.
The Colts did bounce back and scored another TD and carried a slim 17-to-16 lead going into the final quarter. But after a missed field goal attempt from the Colts, the Saints took advantage and marched to the end zone then converted a 2-point conversion for a 24-to-17 advantage. On the next possession, Manning marched the Colts territory but got picked off by Tracy Porter at the Saints-26 and the interception was returned for 74 yards and a touchdown virtually putting the game out of reach. The final score was at 31-to-17 for the Saints, which won their first ever Super Bowl title. Brees completed 32-of-39 passes for 288 yards and 2 TDs and was named the Super Bowl XLIV MVP.
