Recap: A year removed from a failed Super Bowl title attempt, John Elway and the Denver Broncos returned to the championship game this time against the Washington Redskins. The Broncos got off to a good start and led 10-to-0 after the opening quarter. But when the second quarter began, it was all Washington. The Redskins recorded 5 touchdowns scoring 35 points in the 2nd and established an NFL postseason recorded for most points in a period.

The Redskins never looked back and notched the blowout victory with a 42-to-10 final score. Quarterback Doug Williams, who completed 18-of-29 passes for 340 yards with 4 TDs, was named the MVP. Running back Timmy Smith rushed for 204 yards on 22 carries. Smith still holds the record for most yards gained in a game in a Super Bowl.
