Betting on Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (-450)
Don’t be fooled by Mayweather’s odds shrinking from as high as a -2,250 favorite all the way down to -450. Last time we checked, this bout will still be contested in his sport – boxing – the same sport which he has dominated en route to a perfect 49-0 professional record.
Mayweather has managed to build such an incredible record on the strength of being arguably the greatest defensive boxer in history. Some of the very best boxers in the world have hardly laid a glove on him in their bouts against him over the years.
And despite two years of inactivity, you’ve got to believe the 40-year-old Mayweather hasn’t regressed enough physically that he’ll suddenly be susceptible to someone who will be taking part in his very first professional boxing bout in McGregor.
Even a slightly diminished Mayweather should still be able to find his way past McGregor’s inexperience with relative ease. And although he has never been known for his power, it’s telling that he’s priced at -220 to win via KO/TKO.
More importantly, though, apart from money, the thing that Mayweather values more than anything is that big “0” in the loss column on his record and what it means in his case as the best boxer ever. He’s spent his entire career carefully curating that perfection, and it’s hard to believe that he’s about to give it up to a boxing part-timer, which would tarnish his legacy as TBE.
Betting on Conor McGregor (+325)
It’s tough to construct a truly logical argument as to how Conor McGregor can realistically beat the greatest boxer of this generation in his first-ever boxing bout. That’s basically like someone who’s done some time on the treadmill beating Usain Bolt in a 100-meter race.
Even though McGregor has trained for boxing during his MMA training camps, and “allegedly” knocked down former two-division champion Paulie Maglinaggi during sparring, it’ll be a significant step up to face “Money” Mayweather. Even against a 40-year-old Mayweather, McGregor will be at a distinct disadvantage in basically every way when he steps inside that squared circle.
But with boxing, you just never really know. This is a sport famous for controversial decisions and results, which always leaves the door open for some shenanigans.
The fact that so many people have bet McGregor’s odds down to only +325 and that the Nevada State Athletic Commission surprisingly sanctioned the use of eight-ounce gloves are just a couple of the factors that should make you at least somewhat suspicious that there might be more than meets the eye.
Would it be that inconceivable if McGregor somehow won to set up what would likely be an even more profitable rematch? Given how great Mayweather is, it might be. But it’s boxing, so no one should really be all too surprised.
Writer’s Prediction
There is no funny business. Mayweather (-450) moves to an even 50-0 as he beats McGregor via unanimous decision (+165).
