Betting on the New England Patriots (-14)
The Tom Brady-led New England Patriots have finally met their match this season in the form of a familiar foe. The Pats suffered a crushing 31-24 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in a rematch of Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday night. And this time, the tables were turned as New England failed to tie the game after four goal-line attempts in the dying seconds of the contest.
The biggest story about this defeat is how Brady looked mortal that evening. He completed 23 of his 32 passes for 316 yards, but he also threw his first interception of the season after going pick-free the four games since his return from his four-game suspension. And save for a couple of meaningless (aka “rest for the playoffs”) games in Week 17 from the past couple of seasons, Sunday’s bout was the first regular-season game since October of 2013 that the two-time MVP has failed to throw for a touchdown.
Nonetheless, and seeing that the yardage numbers are still glowing, Brady should have a better outing in Week 11 against the embattled 49ers, even if they have to travel cross-country to the Pacific at that. And if New England’s wonder boy struggles yet again, at least the team can count on LeGarrette Blount to counter with a sound running game next Sunday. Blount was actually accountable for all three of the Pats’ TDs against the Seahawks via the ground, and he’ll definitely be geared up to tear San Francisco’s worst-ranked run defense to shreds.
Excluding Sunday’s narrow defeat to a tough Seattle team, the Patriots have still gone 4-0 on the road (SU/ATS) this season, having beaten the likes of the Bills, Steelers and Browns in double-digits. The Niners certainly aren’t an elite team let alone an intimidating one, so you can bank that the Pats will be out for blood and unleash hell on them in the most humiliating way possible after such a humbling defeat to a much-better NFC West club.
Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (+14)
Even though the San Francisco 49ers lost on Sunday to the Arizona Cardinals, 23-20, by way of a game-winning field goal, there’s at least a significant improvement in how they are performing on the field these past couple of weeks.
Hot off a 398-yard performance in Week 9 against the Saints, Colin Kaepernick dialed back his passing attempts in Week 11 against the Cards and looked much more like the dynamic quaterback he was during the Niners’ golden Jim Harbaugh era. Kaepernick was error-free en route to racking up 265 all-purpose yards – 55 of them on the ground on 10 carries – to go with two touchdowns.
But with San Francisco’s offense having found some solace with the switch to Kaepernick at QB, the defense remains the biggest concern for the team. The good news is that the front seven held Arizona’s David Johnson to just 55 rushing yards on 19 carries. The D even forced three Cardinals turnovers in the second half of Sunday’s contest. The bad news is that its secondary still has a bunch of holes in it, as it allowed Carson Palmer to throw for a season-high 376 passing yards.
Seeing that the Niners will now face an even more prolific passing offense from the Patriots, expect them to fold under heavy fire once more. You don’t even need to take points away from the Pats after Brady’s subpar outing in Seattle either, since the 49ers have lost six of their last eight home games (3-5 ATS) and are still far from being a real threat to a true Super Bowl contender like New England.
Writer’s Prediction
Like the recently-concluded presidential election, the Patriots (-14) handily trump the Niners, 35-17 (pun very much intended).
