The Indianapolis Colts are coming off a 17-16 loss to the Washington Commanders at home last Sunday. That was their second loss in a row and the first with Sam Ehlinger as the starting quarterback. The New England Patriots, on the other hand, are now 3-1 straight up in their last four games following a 22-17 road win over the New York Jets Sunday. Will the Colts net their first win with Ehlinger as a starter at the expense of the Pats? Or will the Patriots humble Indianapolis in Foxborough? Betting on the Indianapolis Colts (+5.5)
Regular Season Record: 3-4-1
In his first NFL career start, Ehlinger passed for 201 yards on 17/23 completions. He did not find anyone for a touchdown, but at least he also did not throw an interception. The Colts instead relied more on the legs of running back Jonathan Taylor, who rushed for 76 yards on 16 carries. Indianapolis might have to run a lot again in Week 9 versus New England that has not been very good in stopping the run. New England entered Week 8 allowing 126.0 rushing yards per game.
The Colts are 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games in Week 9.
Betting on the New England Patriots (-5.5)
Regular Season Record:4-4
The Patriots turned to Mac Jones in Week 8 as the starter a week after seemingly having some quandary on who to start between him and Billy Zappe. Jones passed for 194 yards and a touchdown with an interception on 24/35 completions versus the Jets while running back Rhamondre Stevenson almost did it all on offense for the Pats. Stevenson rushed for 71 yards on 16 carries and also had 72 rushing yards on seven receptions. He benefited from good run-blocking from New England, but Jones should only wish the team’s offensive line can be just as better going forward in protecting him after he was sacked six times for a loss of 33 yards in Week 8.
The Patriots are 19-7 against the spread in their last 26 home games versus a team with a losing record on the road.
Writer’s Prediction
The Patriots win, 23-20.
