2016 Texas Longhorns Football Preview
Team Strengths
Look for the Longhorns to ground and pound for yardage on offense. The backfield remains hefty with Chris Warren III and D’Onta Freeman forming a formidable tandem behind the line of scrimmage. Warren had 470 rushing yards and four touchdowns last season, while Foreman gashed opposing defenses for 681 rushing yards and five touchdowns. All told, the Longhorns finished last season 18th in the nation in rushing yards per game (224.8). Over at the other side of the ball, the defense is expected to feed off the energy of its secondary that features elite talents such as the sophomore cornerback pairing of Davante Davis and Holton Hill.
Team Weaknesses
The knock on the Longhorns last year was that they weren’t able to complement their rushing game with a respectable air attack. They were only able to get off 21.0 passes per game and average 145.9 passing yards per contest, 120th and 118th in the nation, respectively. Texas still hasn’t announced its starting quarterback but the three competing signal-callers, Tyrone Swoopes, Jerrod Heard, and Shane Buechele, all have the pressure to deliver.
