Which NFL Head Coach Will Be Fired First in 2016-17 Season
With so many wonderful choices available, we here at TopBet are making you put on your thinking cap early. We’re heading into week five and things are heating up. We wish you all the best with your picks.
We’re kidding, of course, we’ll help you with a little background on each of the top candidates…but then you’re on your own!
Mike McCoy – San Diego Chargers (+200)
Mike McCoy signed on with the Chargers after working as an offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos in 2013. Since then he has taken over, the team has mustered one playoff appearance and a 23-29 regular season record. So far this season, his Chargers could very very very very well be 4-0. However, due to their inept ability to not be able to hold leads, they are 1-3 out of the gates. They led Kansas City by a sizable margin in week one and lost. They led the Indianapolis Colts in week three and lost. They also led the New Orleans Saints last week and lost. McCoy’s reluctance to keep his foot on the gas and points on the board could very well cost him his job in the coming weeks (or days).
Gus Bradley – Jacksonville Jaguars (+300)
There was once a time when people heard the name ‘Jacksonville Jaguars’ and they didn’t laugh. That time was way way back in the day. Times have changed and the regular order has been restored. The Jags are not a strong team. They should be but they’re not. They had one of the best drafts of any team in 2016. The took Florida State star safety Jalen Ramsey and a flyer on the versatile sleeper linebacker Myles Jack out of UCLA. Combine that with the return of last year’s highly-touted rookie defensive lineman Dante Fowler Jr from injury and this team should’ve been on-point. That hasn’t been the case though and the Jags are off to a 1-3 start. Their electric defense is young and their offense is coming along slowly. Needless to say though – should their weak start continue – Gus will be in big trouble.
Rex Ryan – Buffalo Bills (+600)
The football world is getting annoyed with Rex Ryan. His jokes are getting worse and worse and his sweater vests are driving people nuts. Aside from his wardrobe and off-field antics though, he’s brought the Buffalo Bills absolutely nothing since arriving two years ago. Last season they finished 8-8 and were plagued by penalties all year long. Ryan seems to have fixed this problem (thus far) by bringing in another Ryan; his brother Rob as defensive coordinator. Now, with all that we’ve said about Rex and his 0-2 start, his Bills did just knock off the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots – a Super Bowl contender and a Super Bowl favorite. The Pats were of course starting a third-string rookie QB, but the win still counts as a win on paper. Ryan’s leash will get longer if he can keep the Bills relevant. Another losing season could be troublesome for the sarcastic sideliner though.
Jim Caldwell – Detroit Lions (+1,000)
Jim Caldwell is not in an easy spot. You’d have to figure he knew entering that head coaching position with the Detroit Lions though, that at any given time the end could be near. Now take that mentality and subtract one of the most productive receivers in NFL history Calvin Johnson. Megatron retired this past season and the team decided to add Marvin Jones from Cincinnati in his absence. It’s panned out alright but the team has already lost their starting running back Ameer Abdullah to injury for at least a few months and they are now 1-3. The Lions will take on the surging and undefeated Eagles in week five, the surprisingly stunning Los Angeles Rams the next week and the suddenly spurning Redskins after that. They’ll also have dates this season with the undefeated Vikings and heavily-touted Super Bowl contender Green Bay Packers. Caldwell should seriously be stealing the stationary at this point.
