Angelique Kerber
[sc:Other240banner ]There’s no hotter player on clay than Angelique Kerber heading into the 2015 French Open. Kerber started the clay court season with two straight titles at Charleston and Stuttgart, including a Round of 16 win over defending Roland Garros champion Maria Sharapova. It was the first loss at Stuttgart in Sharapova’s career.
The slower clay surface should help Kerber in creating long rallies against her opponents. Rallies are where Kerber excels at with her excellent conditioning and stellar defense. Kerber could give the top seeds a run for their money this year. She’s pegged at +2,500 to win the French Open.
Sara Errani
Sarra Errani (+3,000) is one of the clay court specialists entering the French Open. She has seven career titles on clay, her preferred surface. Errani has also played some of her best tennis at Roland Garros, making runner-up, semifinal and quarterfinal finishes the past three years.
No longer playing doubles, Errani should have much more time to focus on her singles career. She should give the top seeds a handful with her excellent return game (53 percent return games won) and high first-serve percentage (81 percent).
Svetlana Kuznetsova
It’s pretty difficult to sleep on Svetlana Kuznetsova. She’s been an expert on Roland Garros’ clay in recent years. Kuznetsova has made the fourth round or better at the French Open in eight of the past nine years, which includes winning the title in 2009. She’s made the quarterfinal in back-to-back years heading into this tournament.
Also working in Kuznetsova’s favor is that she’s currently in fine form heading into Roland Garros. She defeated defending French Open champion Sharapova in the semifinals of the Madrid Open before losing to Petra Kvitova at the final.
It’s hard to pass on a former champion. Kuznetsova is +4,000 to win at Roland Garros this year.
