Favorites – Jim Furyk and Jason Day

Jim Furyk (+1,400) has mostly struggled at majors this year missing the cut at the Masters, finishing 42nd at the U.S. Open and currently placed 61st in the on-going British Open. He’s having much more success in other tournaments, finishing fifth at the Memorial Tournament, fourth at the WGC: Accenture Match and first at the RBC Heritage. Furyk already has two wins at the RBC Canadian Open in 2006 and 2007.

[sc:Golf240banner ]Furyk also returns as the runner-up of last year’s RBC Canadian Open, finishing with a 16-under par 264. He lost to champion Tim Clark by just one shot. The American should have plenty of success at Glen Abbey GC. He ranks 10th in driving accuracy (71.17 percent) and eighth in strokes gained: tee-to-green (1.419). Both should help him clear the course’s Sixteen Mile Creek to the greens.

Unlike Furyk, Jason Day is having a phenomenal year at the majors. He finished ninth at the U.S. Open with an even 280 and is currently ranked fourth at the on-going British Open. Aside from the majors, Day also has four top five finishes in tournaments this season, including a win at the Farmers Insurance Open in February.

Day (+750) should have plenty of success with his long drives at this tournament. He ranks fourth on tour in driving distance (309 yards) and ranks first in birdie average (4.6). Day should be able to keep his shots low at a manageable course such as Glen Abbey GC.

Sleepers – Gonzalo Fernandez Castano and Ryan Palmer

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano isn’t the best of golfers. He’s ranked 293rd on tour and only has one top 20 finish in the current season (tied for 16th at the AT&T Byron Nelson tournament). But he can make a big statement at the RBC Canadian Open, where he finished tied for fourth with an 11-under 269 last year. Fernandez-Castano ranks just 112th in driving accuracy (61.24 percent) and 154th in tee-to-green (-0.366), but a relatively shallow field at this tournament should help him climb up the leaderboard.

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano

After four top 10 and two top five finishes this season, Ryan Palmer (+2,500) is due for a win. What better course is there to win than at the RBC Canadian Open? Palmer has the stats that could support a big finish at the Glen Abbey GC. He ranks 12th in driving distance (304.7 yards), 16th in strokes gained tee-to-green (1.025) and fifth in scoring average (69.709).

Long Shots – Ernie Els and Retief Goosen

A pair of South Africans may be long shots to win the RBC Canadian Open. But they pay a lot should they find themselves winning the tournament.

At 45 years of age, Ernie Els (+8,000) may already be past his prime; but he can still tear it up when he finds his stroke. He was on a tear last year, finishing seventh at the PGA Championship and fifth at The Barclays in his last five tournaments. He also finished with an eight-under 272 at last year’s RBC Canadian Open. Els only has one top 20 finish this season, 13th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.

Don’t count out Retief Goosen (+4,000). After missing three straight cuts (St. Jude Classic, U.S. Open and John Deere Classic), the South African is currently ranked 10th with a six-under par 138 entering the third round of the British Open. He also had success last year tying for 12th at the RBC Canadian Open with an eight-under 272. Expect his surge at the British Open to instill some confidence into a big performance at Glen Abbey GC.
