Sam Belden | Rory McIlroy, Kevin Chappell, Kevin Streelman, Roberto Castro, Lucas Glover |
Sam Belden, a writer for Fansided’s ProGolfNow is high on five contenders heading into the Wells Fargo Championship. He likes Rory McIlroy, Kevin Chappell, Kevin Streelman, Roberto Castro and Lucas Glover to have some big performances at the Quail Hollow Club.
McIlroy is the No. 3 golfer in the world. He’s got an excellent record at the Wesll Fargo Championship with two wins, a tie for second and two other top 10 finishes in the past six years. He put on a show at Quail Hollow last year, shooting a Saturday 61 en route to a seven-stroke victory.Chappell might not be one of the Tour’s premier talents, but he’s been outstanding the past few weeks. He’s notched three top 10’s in his last four starts, including a solo second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a fourth-place finish at the Valero Texas Open.
Streelman has found the top 15 in each of the past three years at the Wells Fargo Championship. He’s been mediocre recently, but has made the cut in back-to-back tournaments, including the Masters.
Castro has been good at Wells Fargo, posting a tie for eighth in his most recent appearance in 2014. He’s made the cut in all three of his appearances at the tournament. He hasn’t been too good recently, but he’s made three of his last four cuts. He’s 19th on the PGA Tour in driving accuracy and 10th in greens in regulation.
Glover last won in 2011, but it was at Quail Hollow. He’s not the best driver out there. He has seven top 30 finishes at Wells Fargo, including his win in 2011 and a second-place finish in 2009. He won’t be the type to win a trophy this weekend, but his experience could warrant him a flier at the least.

Contenders | Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy |
Sleeper | Patrick Rodgers |
Adam Solowiei of Sports Unbiased gives us three golfers to look out for heading into the Wells Fargo Championship. He’s named Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and a sleeper, Patrick Rodgers, as golfers who could end up winning the tournament.
Mickelson has missed the cut in back-to-back starts, but he also has three top five finishes in 2016. While he’s struggled recently , Mickelson has upped his game at Quail Hollow Club. In 12 career starts at the course, he has finished in the top-12 10 times. He finished fourth at the course in 2015, third in 2013, second in 2010 and fifth in 2009. Solowiei has a gut feeling that he could finally break through this season at Wells Fargo.
McIlroy is having a solid 2016 so far with two top five finishes in WGC events and a top 10 finish at the Masters. He has been good at Quail Hollow with three top 10 finishes, including a playoff defeat in 2012 and a seven-shot win last year.
Rodgers isn’t a household name, but he’s a good pick just considering his performance last year. It was his first-ever start at Wells Fargo, and he finished second to McIlroy. Quail Hollow seems to fit Rodgers’ game well. He may be ready to go considering he’s scored three top 10’s at the beginning of the season and a couple of top 25 finishes a few weeks ago.

Contenders | Rory McIlroy, Gary Woodland, Henrik Stenson |
Sleeper | Webb Simpson |
Winner | Dustin Johnson |
Troy Klongerbo gives us some contenders heading into this year’s Wells Fargo Championship. Rory McIlroy, Gary Woodland and Henrik Stenson are contenders for Klongerbo. Meanwhile, Webb Simpson is the way to go when looking at a sleeper. The most important of his picks is, of course, the winner—Dustin Johnson.
The last time Johnson played in this even was 2011 when a second round 79 saw him miss the cut. Despite his poor showing in his last outing at the tournament, Klongerbo is quick to point out his recent form. Johnson has placed in the top 15 in five straight events and three top five finishes in the last four stroke play events.
