There’s a very good chance Roger Federer will run away with the 2017 Mercedes Cup. But as they say, anything is possible. And with the field relatively open below him, there could be a surprise long shot who makes it all the way to the final. Check out three such potential long shots that could be worth betting on to make an unexpected run in Stuttgart.

Long Shots

Gilles Simon

This season has been Simon’s worst in the past decade. He’s only won nine of his 21 matches to date, and had a disastrous clay court campaign. He crashed out in the first round at Roland Garros, his eighth exit within the first two rounds in his last nine tournaments.

Simon has yet to win a single grass-court tournament in his career, but don’t completely count the Frenchman out just yet, though. He still boasts 12 career singles titles, which is an impressive haul, and he made it to the quarterfinals last year at Stuttgart.

Marcos Baghdatis

It’s been a trying season for Marcos Baghdatis. The 31-year-old Cypriot has won just one match apart from his semifinal run at Auckland earlier in the season, and that one win came via retirement. He’s also coming off a quick exit at the hands of Dudi Sela at the Aegon Surbiton Trophy, a grass-court Challenger event.

But Baghdatis does have a relatively decent draw to work with in the bottom bracket. He might be able to at least score a single win, seeing as he’s got a 5-2 edge in all-time meetings against his first-round foe, Philipp Kohlschreiber. Baghdatis, though, is a +220 underdog for that matchup.

Florian Mayer

Mayer is in a similar boat as Baghdatis in terms of having a very bad year. The German is a disappointing 2-10 overall this season, continuing his downward trend which began back in 2014. But amid that poor three-year stretch, Mayer was still able to sneak in a grass-court title at Halle last year.

Mayer has historically been a very solid grass-court player with a career record of 33-19. His current form is admittedly tough to overlook, but he will nevertheless be one of the best long-shot bets who has even a remote shot at winning the title if he can somehow play up to the level he’s capable of.
