Charl Schwartzel
You cannot afford to sleep on Charl Schwarzel (+2,200). He took a two-month break off golf, returning as rejuvenated as ever. He has won two times in 2016, one each in the PGA and European Tours. He won the Valspar Championship in March and the Tshwane Open in February. Schwartzel has made 5 of 6 cuts at the GC of Houston with two top 20 finishes.Schartzel has been very consistent this season. He’s made 6 of 6 cuts in the PGA Tour this season with two top 10s, including his Valspar Championship title. Expect him to be in the running for another title at the Shell Houston Open.
Sergio Garcia
Sergio Garcia hasn’t won a PGA Tour title since 2012. But he’s been as good as ever this year, ranking ninth in Greens in Regulation and fourth in adjusted scoring. He’s been pretty good recently with a second-place finish at the Honda Classic before placing 11th and 18th at the WGC-Cadillac Championship and WGC: Accenture Match.
Garcia (+2,500) should have a pretty good outing at the Shell Houston Open. He placed third at this tournament in 2014.
Tony Finau
Tony Finau has arrived, ladies and gentlemen. He made waves even before 2016 started by signing with Nike. Now, he proved his worth after winning his first ever PGA Tour title at the Puerto Rico Open.
He played his final eight holes of regulation in two over par to match Steve Marino with a final-round 70, missing a six-foot birdie on No. 18 for the win. Finau had plenty more in store in the playoff. He birdied the par-five 18th hole all three times.
He has shown that he has the makings of a special golfer, much like young wunderkind Jordan Spieth. Finau (+5,000) has the driving to help him keep his score low. He only made three bogies all week at the Puerto Rico Open. He hit 72 percent of his fairways to go along with a 302-yard driving average.
The 26-year-old can surprise plenty come the Shell Houston Open. Keep your eyes on him as he attempts to win a second PGA Tour title.
