Betting on the San Antonio Spurs (65-13)

[sc:NBA250 ]Coming off a loss at Oracle Arena last night, head coach Gregg Popovich’s most likely resting some of his starters for tonight’s second game of a back-to-back against the Denver Nuggets. But that won’t make the Spurs easier to deal with at all because they have a very lethal bench that currently ranks third in the league with 39.6 points per game.

Key to their second unit’s success has been Manu Ginobili, Patty Mills and David West. The three are averaging 25.4 points combined and have had shares of offensive outbursts this season.

Ginobili, in particular, has been arguably the most efficient despite sitting on the sidelines for a few weeks due to a groin injury. He’s averaging almost 10 points per contest and will be entering Pepsi Center posting 11.6 points on 55.3 percent shooting in his past five games. That stretch includes his 20-point performance in the win over New Orleans on March 30.

Meanwhile, defense, defense and defense remain to be the Spurs’ strongest weapon here. San Antonio, which is giving up just 92.5 points prior to yesterday night’s loss to Golden State, should be able to easily limit the Nuggets from their usual scoring average and eventually return back home with a win.

San Antonio is 6-4 SU and 4-6 ATS in its previous 10 games on the road.

Betting on the Denver Nuggets (32-47)

Gary Harris tries to drive past Jordan Clarkson of the Los Angeles Lakers

Despite being the obvious underdogs here, the Denver Nuggets still have a fighting chance of surprising us with an upset.

After all, this team proved that when the Golden State Warriors came to town a few months back. During that bout, the Nuggets piled up the scoreboard with 112 points to ultimately garner the thrilling two-point victory. But now, they’re going to really need to replicate that performance to take down the second-best club in the NBA—the San Antonio Spurs.

Expect the pair of youngsters in Garry Harris and Emmanuel Mudiay to get the party started for Denver. Both guards are scoring double-digits this season with 12 points apiece, and are also set to take on a San Antonio’s league-leading defense.

Moreover, Harris walks into this game with sizzling numbers of 17.3 points and 3.6 dimes in the past three games.  Mudiay, meanwhile, has been arguably more efficient as he’s managed to post 13 or more points in his previous five games. In that stretch, Mudiay is averaging 15.2 points and 5.2 assists per contest.

Of course, Will Barton should prove to be another thorn for the Spurs. Barton’s been limited to just 16 points in his previous three outings, but nevertheless, this guy can get it going at almost any given moment. He’s contributing 14.3 points, 5.7 boards and 2.3 dimes across 39 home games this year.

Denver is 5-5 SU and 5-4-1 ATS in its last 10 home games.

Writer’s Prediction

San Antonio wins it, 105-90.
