2016 Virginia Tech Hokies Football Preview
Team Strengths
The Hokies’ offense is expected to be better this coming season. Prized at +1,500 to win the ACC, Virginia Tech gets back a couple of talented skill players in the form of running back Travon McMillian and wideout Isaiah Ford.McMillan rushed for 1,042 yards and seven touchdowns last season, while Ford was clearly the team’s best receiver in 2015, when he gained 1,164 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Overseeing the offense is new head coach Justin Fuente, who is taking over the team following Frank Beamer’s retirement.
Team Weaknesses
Defensive coordinator Bud Foster has the entire offseason to solve the problem that was the Hokies’ 2015 stop unit. Last season, Virginia Tech allowed 28.2 points, 379.5 total yards and 184.5 rushing yards per game. The pass rush also needs a boost after the team got just 26 sacks, the fewest for Virginia Tech since 1995. In addition, the 10 interceptions were also the lowest the Hokies recorded in a season since Foster took over the job 21 years ago.
