Betting on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (-3)
Georgia Tech will be looking for a much better showing this season after stumbling to a 3-9 record last year. It was a disappointing campaign by the Yellow Jackets who won the Orange Bowl and finished 11-5 the previous season. With quarterback Justin Thomas surrounded by inexperienced players last season, the Yellow Jackets struggled mightily to put away close games. They lost six games by just eight points or less last campaign.Experience will not be a problem for head coach Paul Johnson this time around. 11 starters will be returning for Georgia Tech this year including Thomas who’s hell-bent on finishing his college football career on a high. He has benefited this offseason from working alongside teammates Marcus Marshall, Clinton Lynch, Dedrick Mills, Marcus Allen, Qua Searcy and Ricky Jeune. Thomas has also formed a deep bond with his offensive linemen Freddie Burden, Eason Fromayan, Will Bryan, Shamire Devine and Trey Klock.
It will be interesting to see how Thomas works with that much-maligned offensive line this season. Ball security was the main problem for Georgia Tech last season with the Yellow Jackets fumbling the ball a whopping 36 times. Thomas had 10 of those fumbles with Georgia Tech losing possession in four of them. That constant defensive pressure also took a toll on Thomas’ passing game. He threw eight picks last year.
Georgia Tech is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 games. The Yellow Jackets are pegged at +40,000 to win the 2017 College Football Championship Game.
Betting on the Boston College Eagles (+3)
With days remaining until the Eagles’ opening game of the season, Boston College’s quarterback situation is still nowhere near a resolution. However, whoever starts under center shouldn’t be too much of an issue against Georgia Tech, not with the Eagles possessing a top-caliber defense. Seven starters return from a defense that was tops in the entire FBS against the run last year, surrendering just 83 yards per game.
The Eagles know fully well, though, that their defense can’t do it all alone by themselves. They held eight opponents to 19 points or less last season but thanks to an ineffective offense, lost five games by a field goal or less. The arrival of Patrick Towles, however, can help turn things around for Boston College. The senior transfer quarterback threw for 5,099 yards and 24 touchdowns in his three seasons at Kentucky. He will help boost a BC offense that averaged just 275.6 total yards last season, third-worst in the FBS.
The total has gone under in the Eagles’ last three games against the Yellow Jackets. The Eagles are pegged at +75,000 to win the 2017 College Football Championship Game.
