It was a long and excruciating process but the San Diego Chargers have finally signed their top pick in the 2016 NFL Draft Joey Bosa to a 4-year deal. Following their abysmal performance against Minnesota in their third preseason game on Sunday, it’s no surprise that the team caved and brought in their new defensive specialist the very next day.

San Diego Chargers sign Joey Bosa to four-year $25.8 million dollar guaranteed contract
The former Ohio State defensive end will report to the Chargers camp immediately and will likely/possibly get a sniff of action in the team’s final preseason game on Thursday against the 49ers.
After reporting that the Bosa’s team balked at the Chargers latest offer, and also mentioning that the team would only offer less money from there on out, the Chargers splurged on the big rookie. Bosa’s contract will give him $25.8 million dollars over the next four years with a guaranteed $17 million signing bonus.
Adam Schefter of ESPN commented that the “Chargers got some of what they wanted from [Bosa] and he got some of what he wanted from them.”
It seems to be a pretty cut and dry deal for the team. It’s a nice addition and it comes at the right time. Not only does the organization need him on the field, they also need his presence off the turf as they try to adhere to their fans and the city to join their bid for a new downtown stadium.
It does bring forward a few questions though:
- If the Chargers weren’t making a pitch for a new stadium, would Bosa be under contract right now?
- If the Chargers didn’t get spanked by Minnesota 23-10 on Sunday, would Bosa be under contract right now?
They were so far apart and the animosity was pretty prevalent just a 48 hours ago. Either way you slice it though, the two have come to an agreement and #99 should (hopefully) be on the field to start the season next Sunday.
