Betting on the Tennessee Titans (+5.5)
At the end of the first half, the Tennessee Titans appeared destined to upset the reigning NFC North champion Vikings in their season-opener. The Titans entered the third quarter with a commanding 10-0 lead, but things fell apart in the second half thanks to their carelessness and inexperience.Marcus Mariota, who passed for 271 yards with two touchdowns, was the main reason for the collapse. He accounted for three costly turnovers (two picks and a fumble), which resulted to a pair of defensive touchdowns for the opposition. On the bright side though, the former Heisman Trophy winner should have more room and time to work with in the Titan’s second assignment—the Lions.
Mariota is going to face a Detroit defense that allowed nearly 400 passing yards in its game versus the Colts. That’s definitely good news for rookie wide receiver Tajae Sharpe and TE Delanie Walker, who was held to just three passes for 42 yards in Week 1. The former had an impressive NFL debut, racking up a team-high seven receptions for 76 yards.
Of course, the Tennessee offense will also continue to pride itself on the ground. Leading the way will be none other than the pair of DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry. The former Eagle delivered the Titans’ two scores versus Minnesota, one of which was an acrobatic 6-yard touchdown in the second period.
Tennessee is 2-8 SU and ATS in its last 10 road games overall.
Betting on the Detroit Lions (-5.5)
A 43-yard field goal from Matt Prater secured the Detroit Lions an exhausting road win over the Colts on Sunday night. But that wouldn’t have been possible without the brilliant performance from Detroit’s long-time quarterback: Matthew Stafford.
Stafford went 31 of 39 for 340 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions at the end. His biggest play, needless to say, was when he engineered the game-winning drive with less than a minute left in regulation to set up Prater for the aforementioned field goal.
With the win, Stafford and co. head back to Detroit for their home opener against the Titans this weekend. It should prove to be another tough test for the Lions, who have lost their last four meetings (1-3 ATS) against Tennessee.
Look for the hosts to keeping pounding it both on the ground and air. The Lions received some solid contributions from their dual-threat weapons in Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick versus Indy. The pair combined for 108 yards on 19 carries with a score—courtesy of the latter. They also had 120 receiving yards on 10 catches, with one touchdown apiece.
Writer’s Prediction
Detroit (-5.5) wins this one, 30-16.
