Betting on the LSU Tigers (-3.5)

LSU had a nice start to its conference play, beating Mississippi State, 23-20, last Saturday. Perhaps the bigger development for the Tigers is that they might have found the solution at quarterback in Danny Etling.

Etling subbed for the ineffective Brandon Harris midgame and proceeded to pass for 215 yards with a touchdown on 19 of 30 completions. He still has so much to prove to be fully considered the man under center for LSU, but his solid play against the Bulldogs serves as a nice springboard for him heading into the match against Auburn, a team that allows 251.7passing yards per game.

Still, Leo Fournette is the center of LSU’s offense. The backfield beast of Baton Rouge ran for 147 yards and a couple of touchdowns against Mississippi State. Fournette is Fournette and he’ll burst through any defense once he gets going but he’s also going to need Etling to complement him to keep Auburn’s stop unit honest and always guessing.

Fournette is no stranger to laying waste on Auburn’s D, having rushed for 228 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries in a 45-21 home win against Gus Malzahn’s boys last year.

LSU is 4-1 SU in its last five games against Auburn.

Betting on the Auburn Tigers (+3.5)

Unlike LSU, Auburn comes into this Saturday’s matchup coming off a bad 29-16 loss to Texas A&M last week. It was the Tigers’ second loss—both at home—this season.

A bounce back win against LSU would be a shot in the arm of Auburn and would certainly provide a boost to Malzahn’s job security. For that to happen, however, Auburn has to find a fix at the quarterback position with both Sean White and Josh Franklin III having trouble orchestrating the team’s aerial attacks. Auburn is averaging just 194.0 passing yards thus far on the season.

The backfield is much more promising for Auburn, as the Tigers are 15th in the nation with 261.7 rushing yards per game. The tandem of Kerryon Johnson and Kamryn Pettway can keep Auburn in this game, especially if the defense managed to force LSU limit Fournette’s touches.

Auburn, which is 3-0 ATS in its last three at home against LSU, has allowed just 20.7 points per game this season, currently 47th overall in the FBS. Rattling someone like a fresh-off-the-oven Etling in the pocket should come easier for the Tigers’ D that has averaged 1.67 sacks per game.
