Betting on the San Diego State Aztecs (-16.5)
Donnel Pumphrey’s been inflicting havoc on the ground for San Diego State this season. He’s accumulated 891 yards rushing already, including four-straight 100-yard games with at least one touchdown. The latest one came in last week, where the senior back tallied 141 yards on 31 carries to help the Aztecs bounce back from their first loss of the year to beat UNLV.
Expect the Aztecs, who are racking up 253.5 yards rushing per contest, to keep feeding Pumphrey a lot of touches against Fresno State. The Bulldogs have lost their last four games, a stretch in which their defense was giving up an average of 43.0 points. That should be a good sign for Pumphrey and co. to be even more aggressive and confident in exposing the opposing D.
Rashaad Penny should also make some noise on the ground for San Diego State. He’s found the end zone in the past two games and is fresh off his best performance of the season against the Rebels. Penny rumbled for 110 yards and a score in that game.
San Diego State is 7-3 SU and 4-6 ATS in its past 10 road games.
Betting on the Fresno State Bulldogs (+16.5)
The series between the Fresno State and San Diego State has usually been pretty close. The Aztecs won last year’s meeting, while the Bulldogs won the previous three matchups prior to 2015. This Friday’s showdown, however, is looking like a loss for the latter.
Quarterback Chason Virgil has been barely playing acceptable football, completing just 48.6 percent of his passes for 1,366 yards, nine scores and four picks this season. It was encouraging to see at least that he didn’t throw another an interception in Fresno State’s setback to Nevada in Week 6.
Speaking of which, the Bulldog’s lone bright spot has been Dontel James. The tailback was solid despite the loss to the Wolf Pack, finishing with 27 carries for a season-high 169 yards —his second 100-yard performance of the year—and a TD. He’ll be trying to replicate that success against an Aztecs D that held UNLV touchdown-less and to just 122 yards of total offense last week.
Fresno State is 0-4 SU (2-2 ATS) in its last four games overall.
