Betting on the Texas Longhorns
Charlie Strong has never felt safe about his job but at least he has guided the Longhorns to two wins over ranked teams thus far this season, the latest of which was a 35-34 win over No. 8 Baylor last Saturday, the biggest win of the Longhorns this year.
The win was a nice springboard for the Longhorns going into an exciting matchup with the high-scoring Texas Tech squad. Games against the Red Raiders tend to be a scoring fest given the seemingly minimal attention Texas Tech pays to opposing teams’ attacks. The best path to success for the Longhorns in this game could be through the ground, where Red Raiders constantly look primed for annihilation, as they are allowing 213.75 rushing yards per game—second worst in the Big 12.
Texas running back D’Onta Foreman is ready to take on that kind of leaky run defense. Foreman has rushed for at least 100 yards in each of his last nine outings, including his performance against Baylor in which he rushed for 250 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.
Texas is 3-1 ATS in its last four games overall.
Betting on the Texas Tech Red Raiders
We talked about the prospect of Texas punishing the Red Raiders defense. And to be fair, we have to sit down and discuss for a bit the legitimate chance of Kliff Kingsbury’s boys to embarrass Texas’ defense. After all, the Red Raiders own the best passing game in the nation and are second best in total offense.
With an average of 500.6 passing yards per game, the Red Raiders lead the FBS in that department by a comfortable margin. Patrick Mahomes is the nucleus of this deadly air attack, as the quarterback has passed for 3,519 yards and 28 touchdowns against eight interceptions for a 161.4 passer rating.
The Red Raiders, however, weren’t as prolific on offense last Saturday, when they edged out TCU in a 27-24 overtime road win. Mahomes threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns with a pick on 24 of 39 completions. Still, the Red Raiders got a win and they did it partly with their defense showing up, as they held TCU to only 17 points in regulation.
Watch out for the Red Raiders to revert to their high-flying passing attack at home this Saturday. Texas can be good on defense but the Longhorns have been inconsistent for most of the season. Moreover, Texas isn’t playing as well on the road as it is in Austin. The Longhorns are just 2-8 SU and ATS in their last 10 road games.
