Betting on the California Golden Bears (+14.5)
What in the world is happening to California? The Golden Bears crashed to their second consecutive defeat with an embarrassing 66-27 loss to the Washington Huskies on Saturday. The Rebels simply had no answer for Heisman candidate Jake Browning who threw for 378 yards and six touchdowns. It was another disappointing display by the Bears who dropped to 2-4 in conference play this season.
They will look to get their season back on track when they lock horns with Washington State this coming weekend. It won’t get any easier for them against a Cougars side that possess one of the nation’s best defenses this season. The Cougars are 39th in the FBS in total defense, surrendering just 373.3 yards per game this campaign. The pressure then is on quarterback Davis Webb to deliver the goods in this pivotal clash. He completed just 23-of-47 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown with three costly second-half interceptions in the loss to Washington State.
That being said, the Bears will still fancy their chances against the Cougars as they have fared extremely well against them of late. The Bears have won each of their last two meetings with the Cougars. California defeated Washington, 34-28, in their lone clash last season. Defense was the name of the game for the Bears in that contest as they forced four turnovers and recorded seven sacks against the Cougars. They will need that same kind of defensive performance against a Washington State side that’s averaging 43.0 points per game this season, 10th-best in the FBS.
The Bears are 2-8 SU and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Washington State Cougars (-14.5)
There’s just no stopping Washington State right now. The Cougars extended their winning streak to seven games with a resounding 69-7 victory over the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday. It was another convincing performance by the Cougars who climbed up to 23rd place in the latest AP Top 25 poll. That’s quite a turnaround for Washington State who started the season 0-2.
Providing the impetus for Washington State’s latest victory was its terrific passing game. The Cougars passed for a whopping 474 yards in their win against the Wildcats. Luke Falk threw for 311 yards and four touchdowns while Tyler Hilinski passed for 163 yards and a pair of scores. Falk has now thrown for over 300 yards in seven of his nine games this season. Washington State is second in the nation in passing offense, averaging 383.9 yards per game through the air this season. They will be licking their chops at the prospect of facing a California defense that has already surrendered 22 passing touchdowns this campaign.
The Cougars are 8-2 SU and ATS in their last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cougars (-14.5) stretch their unbeaten run to eight games with a comprehensive 48-31 victory.
