Betting on the Clemson Tigers (-21.5)
There’s probably no immediate cure for the bruised egos of Clemson after taking a gutshot of a 43-42 loss last week at the hands of Pittsburgh that took the Tigers out of College Football Playoff picture. If anything, a convincing win over a middling Wake Forest should make the healing faster for the wounded Tigers.
Clemson still has a shot at making it back to the top four so expect it to take this Saturday’s game seriously. Deshaun Watson will look to recreate the walloping he unleashed on the Demon Deacons last year, when he passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns (with two interceptions) and added 44 more on the ground and a score in a 33-13 win on November 21, 2015.
Wake Forest’s defense is nothing to brush aside, but Clemson’s attack, with Watson at the helm, remains capable of setting the Demon Deacons on fire. Clemson averages 502.6 total yards.
Defensively, the Tigers need to get back to form after letting the Panthers manufacture 464 total yards last week. With the Tigers looking for a strong bounce back, expect their defense to show up with some extra fang against Wake Forest. Clemson is 12th in the nation in scoring defense with only 18.4 points allowed per contest.
Clemson is 4-2 ATS in its last six games as favorites by at least eight points.
Betting on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (+21.5)
For the second-straight week, the Demon Deacons face a Heisman Trophy candidate and dual threat quarterback, as they welcome Deshaun Watson and the Tigers at home this weekend.
Wake Forest did a fantastic job of bottling up Lamar Jackson in the first half last week, even taking a 12-0 lead at the half. Unfortunately for the Demon Deacons, there was another half to play in which Louisville stormed back to end the contest with a 44-12 victory. Still, the Demon Deacons have shown the ability to slow down, at least in moments, opposing attacks. They have a solid pass rush, one that is third so far in the ACC in sacks with 32.0, including the five they scored upon Jackson last Saturday.
The Demon Deacons’ defense really needs to be at its best against Clemson because their offense isn’t something they could rely on, especially with the Tigers’ topnotch stop unit opposite it.
The team averages just 20.4 points per game with their passing game putting up 164.8 yards per game. The rushing game, on the other hand, produces 154.9 yards per outings.
Wake Forest is 4-0 ATS in its last four games as an underdog by at least 20 points.
