Betting on the San Jose Sharks (33-18-5, 71 pts)
What in the world is happening to San Jose? The Sharks crashed to their fourth consecutive defeat with a gut-wrenching 2-1 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. It was a disappointing result for the Sharks who have now lost five of their last seven games. They will look to get their season back on track when they face the New Jersey Devils later today.
The Sharks will fancy their chances of doing just that as they have fared extremely well against the Devils on the road of late. The Sharks have won each of their last four meetings with the Devils at Prudential Center. They have outscored the Devils, 14-8, during that span. San Jose edged past New Jersey, 2-1, in their last encounter in this arena.
For the Sharks to snap their losing streak today, they will need to focus on their defense once again. The Sharks have surrendered a whopping 16 goals over their last four games. The onus then is on goalie Martin Jones to step up his play today. He made 41 saves as the Sharks shut out the Devils, 4-0, in their last meeting in San Jose on November 21.
The Sharks are 5-5 in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the New Jersey Devils (23-21-10, 56 pts)
The San Jose Sharks may be in a bit of a funk right now but the same can’t be said about their next opponents, New Jersey. The Devils are one of the hottest teams in the NHL right now, going 7-3-1 in the 11 games preceding their bye week. The Devils, who are 3-0-1 in their last four games, have benefited from the strong play of their goalie Cory Schneider. He surrendered just two goals in his last two games before the bye week and will get the start for Sunday’s clash against San Jose.
One guy he will need to watch out for this coming weekend is the red-hot Patrick Marleau. The Sharks forward netted his 20th goal of the season in Saturday’s loss to Philadelphia. It is the 14th time in Marleau’s storied 19-year NHL career that he has reached the 20-goal plateau. Marleau, who will be playing in his 599th consecutive game Sunday, brings a nine-game point streak (8-5-13) into Prudential Center.
Marleau isn’t the only player in this matchup, though, who’s firing on all cylinders right now. Adam Henrique has a five-game point streak and five goals in his last eight outings for New Jersey. Kyle Palmieri has three goals and four points in his last four appearances while rookie Pavel Zacha has four goals and three assists in his last nine games for the Devils.
The Devils are 2-8 in their last 10 home games.
