Betting on the San Antonio Spurs (43-13)
The Spurs went on a six-game road trip before the All-Star break and finished 4-2, which based on the high standards set for them, is a little shaky. The good thing, however, is it ended the way it should: a convincing win.
They routed the Magic in their most recent victory, 107-79. It was a performance that displayed another solid play from both ends, as Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge each had 20-plus points, and the team’s defense recorded 12 steals and only allowed four threes, five offensive rebounds, and a 39.5 shooting percentage.
Such performance, along with a one-week break is just what they needed to before visiting the Clippers, a club they are 0-2 this season. In both meetings, the Spurs shot below 41 percent, and Leonard and Aldridge interchanged off-nights. Their starting point guard for those games, Patty Mills and Tony Parker, who started separately, combined to go 2-for-15 from the field for six points.
The Spurs are 7-3 in their last 10 games on the road (5-5 ATS), and they remain as the only team to be top five in points allowed, offensive efficiency, and defensive efficiency.
Betting on the Los Angeles Clippers (35-22)
The Clippers will be in their second night of a back-to-back. They are fresh off their 10th straight loss to the Warriors, 123-113, thanks to blowing a double-digit lead in the second half. It also snapped a four-game winning streak.
Despite owning a pair of wins over the visitors this season, the exhausting defeat may play a role in facing another well-oiled machine like the Spurs, especially since this time, there’s no Chris Paul (thumb) to break down the defense.
With that, of course, Blake Griffin is the man watch out for. He scored 28 points in their first meeting and wasn’t able to play in the second (knee). Since coming back last January 24th, Griffin has been putting up 23.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game.
Griffin should be joined by DeAndre Jordan’s defense (12 PPG, 13.7 RPG) and the quick offense of Austin Rivers, JJ Redick, and Jamal Crawford. The guards are in a stretch where they are averaging over 16 PPG.
The Clipps are 7-2 in their last nine games at home (6-3 ATS).
Writer’s Prediction
The Spurs (+3.5) win, 110-102.
