Betting on the Washington Wizards (46-28)
For the first time since 1979, the Washington Wizards can once again call themselves division champs.
The Wizards defeated the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, 119-108, to make their division-clinching hopes a reality and also further extend their win streak to four games. All-Star point guard John Wall led all scorers that evening with 34 points and 14 assists, while four of his fellow teammates scored in double-digits.
Count on Wall, who has 20 double-double outings on the road this season, to guide Washington towards another win away from the Capital this Wednesday. However, he and his team will play their second of a back-to-back against the Clippers, giving them no time to slack off even after the Wiz’s latest milestone.
Still, the Wizards need not travel at all for Wednesday’s contest at Staples, so they’re not going to battle with jetlag whatsoever against the Clips. Furthermore, they’ve also won eight of their last 10 road games (5-4-1 ATS), leaving head coach Scott Brooks to ponder over whether he should give his guys a breather for the postseason ahead or to sustain that very momentum all the way into the playoffs.
Betting on the Los Angeles Clippers (44-31)
If the brutal 98-97 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Sunday isn’t enough to stoke the Los Angeles Clippers’ fire, we don’t know what will, and they better find out soon before heading into the playoffs.
On paper, Los Angeles’ players appear to have had solid performances. DeAndre Jordan finished with 20 points and 11 boards as the only player with a double-double that night, while Chris Paul and Blake Griffin scored 17 apiece and shot well from the floor. However, surrendering an 18-point lead to the lowly Kings is a slap in the face, one that Paul himself did not take lightly. CP3 stated that Sunday’s loss was one of the worst he’d suffered his entire career.
Simply put, the Clippers need to find their shooting stroke in the absence of J.J. Redick, who’s out with an ankle injury and may not be able to suit up yet this Wednesday. The team’s other sharpshooter, Jordan Crawford, made just one of his five shots from beyond the arc against the Lakers as the team combined to shoot just 10-of-29 from three-point range (34.5 percent).
Like Washington, Los Angeles has a little more room for error since they’ve already clinched a playoff spot. But given how badly the team was humiliated by Sacramento, it has got to bounce back tremendously as to not give other Western Conference contenders an idea that they’re falling apart at the worse time. A visit from the Wizards could be the cure, as the Clips have won eight-straight home games against the boys from DC (albeit just 4-4 ATS).
Writer’s Prediction
The Clippers win a close one, 102-98, but the Wizards (+6) still manage to cover the underdog spread at that.
