Betting on the Kansas City Royals
The Royals close out their series with the Yankees tonight with Miguel Almonte making his first appearance this season and first career start. Almonte has been pitching out of the bullpen since entering the big leagues last year, posting a 6.23 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 8.2 innings spread over nine appearances last year.
Almonte’s troubles continued in 2016 in the minors, where he had a 5.92 ERA in 76 total innings of action. Prior to his start later against the Yankees, Almonte registered a 1.86 ERA in 29 innings, with some spent in six starts.
The lights at Yankee Stadium could be a little bright for younh pitchers like Almonte, who hasn’t been in the majors in September of 2015. The offense will have to get the 24-year-old’s back.
Eric Hosmer’s and Salvador Perez’s bats have been the most consistent for Kansas City. As of this writing, Hosmer is batting .381 this month, while Perez is slashing .299/.353/.532.
Betting on the New York Yankees
Masashiro Tanaka will look to right the ship after back-to-back ugly starts that saw his record dip to 5-3 and his ERA rise to 6.56 on the season.
Tanaka’s last outing was a 9-5 road loss to Tampa Bay on May 20, when he gave up six earned runs on nine hits in just three innings. Prior to that, he was blown to bits by Houston, giving up eight earned runs on seven hits in only 1.2 innings of a 10-7 loss on May 14. Tanaka was heavily damaged by the long ball, as he surrendered seven home runs combined homers in those games.
A matchup against the offensively-challenged Royals, however, could just be the treatment he needs to recover. The Royals are bottom four in the majors in batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage.
As for their own offense, the Yankees have an offense capable of making Almonte’s trip to the Big Apple a traumatic one. The Yankees paces the American League in runs and home runs, while also standing second in the league in batting average.
