Betting on the Los Angeles Angels (25-24)
Starting for the Angels in the series finale is Daniel Wright (0-0, 5.54 ERA). He steps in for Alex Meyer who unfortunately landed on the DL with back spasms. The Angels have faith, however, in Wright to get the job done in this emergency start. He was terrific in his lone start this season against Toronto, limiting the Blue Jays to just three hits over five scoreless innings.
Wright will need some help, though, if he is to beat Tampa Bay today. Expected to do the heavy lifting for the Angels offense are Andrelton Simmons and Mike Trout. Simmons has been on fire of late, going 11-of-27 in his last seven games with a homer and four RBIs. Trout, on the other hand, is having another stellar year, leading the Angels in batting average, homers, RBIs, on-base percentage and hits. He’s 8-of-21 in his last seven outings with two homers and five RBIs.
The Angels are 3-1 in their last four road games.
Betting on the Tampa Bay Rays (24-25)
Pitching for Tampa Bay in the final game of this three-game set is Matt Andriese (4-1, 3.75 ERA). He escaped with a victory against the Yankees on Saturday despite allowing five runs in five-plus innings. Andriese is now 3-0 in his last four starts. In 50.1 innings pitched this season, he has recorded 47 strikeouts and 19 walks. The right-hander has been susceptible in giving up the long ball as he has allowed nine homers in nine starts this season.
The good news for Andriese is that the Rays are starting to wake up from their offensive slumber. They finally snapped their 18-inning scoreless streak against the Angels on Wednesday, exploding for five runs which included back-to-back jacks by Colby Rasmus and Steven Souza Jr. That 5-2 victory also ended the Rays’ three-match losing skid as they moved back to a game below .500.
The Rays are 4-6 in their last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
