Betting on the Washington Nationals
It’s feeling like Strasmas season for the Nationals every time Stephen Strasburg is on the mound. The former no. 1 pick has been downright filthy on the mound this season.
Strasburg is 7-1 with a 2.91 ERA in 11 starts this season. He’s gotten even more destructive of late, going 4-0 with a 2.28 ERA and 36 strikeouts. Strasburg’s also undefeated on the road so far this year with a 5-0 record and a 2.68 ERA in six starts away from the capital.
Strasburg will have to be locked in at the plate, especially with Clayton Kershaw pitching for the Dodgers. That said, the Nats are wielding some confident bats against the Dodgers’ ace. Daniel Murphy is 4-for-13 (.308) in his career against Kershaw. Anthony Rendon is 5-for-16 (.313), Ryan Zimmerman is 7-for-22 (.318), and Jayson Werth is 10-for-32 (.313) with a couple of home runs off Kershaw.
Betting on the Los Angeles Dodgers
It’s been nearly automatic for the Dodgers whenever Clayton Kershaw is on the mound. Dating back to last year, the Dodgers are 16-4 in his last 20 starts.
This season, Kershaw is so far sporting 7-2 record with a 2.28 ERA in 12 starts. Kershaw bounced back from an uncharacteristic performance against the Chicago Cubs on May 28, when he allowed four earned runs (three homers) on 11 hits in 4.1 innings of a 9-4 win home win. The following start, Kershaw held the Milwaukee Brewers to only a lone run on two hits in seven innings of a 2-1 road win on June 2. Kershaw got a pair of no-decisions in that game, however.
Kershaw has been a terrific performer against the Nationals in his career. He is 10-2 with a 2.02 ERA in 14 appearances versus Washington since 2008.
The Dodgers’ offense, meanwhile, has given Strasburg some trouble in the past. Strasburg is 1-1 with a 3.06 ERA in five starts against LA. Adrian Gonzalez is 6-for-12 with two doubles against Strasburg.
Writer’s Prediction
LA (-164) wins, 4-3.
