Betting on the New York Yankees (43-36)

Moneyline: +106

Pitching for the Yankees in the final game of this three-game set is Luis Severino (5-3, 3.15 ERA). The right-hander struck out a career-high 12 batters without allowing a walk in a no-decision against the White Sox his last time out. He’s also gone at least six innings in each of his last seven starts. Severino fared poorly, however, in his last outing against Houston. He lasted just 2.1 innings against the Astros last May 14, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks.

With Severino still a big question mark at this point, the onus is on the Yankee hitters to provide some much-needed runs today. One guy who’s swinging the bat well for New York at the moment is Aaron Judge. The 25-year-old has been unstoppable in his rookie season, leading the Bronx Bombers in homers, RBIs and on-base percentage this campaign. Judge, a potential Triple Crown candidate, is 5-of-18 in his last seven games with a homer and four RBIs. The 6-foot-7 star has also drawn a whopping 13 walks during this span.

Betting on the Houston Astros (55-27)

Moneyline: -116

Starting for Houston in the series finale is Mike Fiers (5-3, 3.98 ERA). After surrendering 18 home runs in 46.2 innings during his first nine starts, the right-hander has gone 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA in his last six appearances. During that span, Fiers has allowed no homers in 37 innings of action. The Astros will need Fiers to deliver that kind of pitching against a Yankees side that’s sizzling at the plate at the moment. The Bronx Bombers have scored a combined 19 runs in the first two games of this series.

Fiers can’t do it all alone, though, and he needs the Astros hitters to step up their play today. One guy who needs to contribute for the AL West leaders is George Springer. He leads the Astros in home runs and RBIs this season. Springer is 8-of-22 in his last six games with three homers and six RBIs. He’s hitless, though, in two career at-bats against Severino. Another player who’s in fine form for Houston right now is Josh Reddick. He’s batting .538 (7-of-13) in his last five games with five RBIs to boot.

Writer’s Prediction

The Astros (-116) win, 4-3.
