Betting on the New York Mets (47-53)

Moneyline: +135

New York’s losing woes show no sign of abating as the Mets suffered a disappointing 7-5 defeat to the San Diego Padres on Thursday. The Mets have now lost three of their last five outings as they dropped down to 47-53 in the NL East standings. They now trail the division-leading Washington Nationals by 14 games.

With the Mets struggling mightily right now, the pressure is on Rafael Montero (1-7, 5.19 ERA) to deliver a quality start for New York tonight. He was solid in his last start against the Oakland Athletics, allowing three runs on seven hits in seven innings of action. The Mets couldn’t turn Montero’s strong performance into a victory, however, as they suffered a gut-wrenching 3-2 loss. Montero, who has a 3.60 ERA and 22 strikeouts over his past four starts, is just 1-3 during that span.

Montero can’t do it all alone and he needs the Mets’ offense to wake up from its slumber. One guy who needs to step up for the Mets is Michael Conforto. He has been doing it all for New York, leading the team in batting average and on-base percentage this season. Conforto is 9-for-31 in his last eight games with three homers and six RBIs. He went 2-of-5 last night with two runs scored in a losing effort against the Padres.

The Mets are 2-4 in their last six road games. They are pegged at +10,000 to win the 2017 World Series.

Betting on the Seattle Mariners (51-52)

Moneyline: -150

The Seattle Mariners had their two-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday with a humbling 4-0 defeat to the Boston Red Sox. The Mariners simply had no answer for Boston ace Chris Sale who pitched seven innings of three-hit ball. With the loss, the Mariners now trail the Kansas City Royals by 3.5 games in the AL Wild Card standings.

The Mariners will look to get their season back on track when they face the Mets in their series opener tonight. Starting for Seattle in this critical matchup is Ariel Miranda. The Cuban has been a workhorse for Seattle as he’s the only Mariners pitcher to make every start this year. Miranda has delivered quite well for the Mariners, going 7-4 with a 4.30 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 20 starts this season. His last start for Seattle was quite a gem, limiting the New York Yankees to just two runs in 5.1 innings of work. He will look to keep the momentum going against the Mets whom he will be facing for the first time in his career.

As for the offense, the Mariners are feeding off a hot Ben Gamel right now. The right fielder is batting .400 (10-of-25) in his last seven games with a homer and three RBIs. He leads the Mariners in on-base percentage this season.

The Mariners are 3-2 in their last five home games. They are pegged at +6,600 to win the 2017 World Series.

Writer’s Prediction
