Betting on the Detroit Lions
The Lions are back at work after getting ousted in the wild-card game by the Seattle Seahawks in the last playoffs. But in the meantime, Detroit will roll off a bunch of players competing for roster spots and rookies to battle this Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Among them is sixth-rounder Brad Kaaya, whom the Lions saw enough potential for them to take a flyer on the former Miami quarterback. Kaaya isn’t likely to win the backup role to Matthew Stafford but the Lions will still get him in the game for a good amount of reps possibly. Jake Rudock is the one expected to be the second-stringer QB come the regular season so he too should see plenty of snaps against the Colts. Detroit relied mostly on their pass attack last season, wherein 64.6 percent of their offensive plays were off pass plays—third highest in the NFL.
Over at the backfield, the Lions might deploy newcomer Matt Asiata, who was signed over the offseason to add some depth to the running back position. Detroit averaged just 79.9 rushing yards per game but is hoping for an uptick in production on the ground to ease some load off Stafford.
Betting on the Indianapolis Colts
Andrew Luck’s shoulder injury has caused a bit of confusion in the Colts’ camp. While it has been reported that Luck could miss the first six games of the season, there remains no accurate time for his return, thus opening the door for a Week 1 return.
That being said, the Colts will have to prepare for the worst case scenario and part of that could be playing backups Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morris heavily this preseason. Both players were part of the Colts’ Week 1 roster last season so assimilation with teammates shouldn’t be much of a problem.
This Sunday’s game will also be the first competitive NFL game for rookie cornerback Malik Hooker, who was drafted by the Colts to give the team’s secondary a shot in the arm. The Colts were just 26th in the league in 2016 with 262.5 passing yards allowed per contest.
