Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (+5)
Despite the super disappointing 2016 campaign (finished 3-13), there’s anticipation around the Jaguars… again. It all starts with former coach Tom Coughlin, who’s now serving as their Vice President of Football Operations. The 70-year-old, as you may know, is a one of the league’s most respected figures, thanks to his decades of experience and three Super Bowl rings with the New York Giants (two as a coach and one as an assistant).
Coughlin did a good job loading up the roster. On defense, he brought in plenty of veterans that are still poised to provide good impact – Calais Campbell, Barry Church, and AJ Bouye, in particular, were all key pieces to their former teams. They can be expected to be fine additions with the squad’s mainstays and up-and-comers.
The offense, meanwhile, should be eager to use the preseason as a tool to establish a better rhythm than last year’s. Quarterback Blake Bortles isn’t causing excitement for now, especially since he just threw five picks in training camp, but since there’s enough weapons on the unit for him to work with, he still shouldn’t be counted out. The two Allens – Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns – along with number three receiver Marquise Lee, are still young and entering their peaks, while prized rookie running back Leonard Fournette is seen to have superstar potential.
Betting on the New England Patriots (-5)
Tom Brady isn’t expected to see the field this preseason, but since they are the defending champs and the absolute gold standard in the NFL, everything should still go smoothly. Jimmy Garropolo and Jacoby Brissett will split the playing time under center, which should be intriguing since the former plays on the pocket and the latter is a mobile QB that likes to extend plays with his feet.
The two back-ups will likely throw to second and third-stringers for most of the game, and it’ll most probably be headlined by second-year wideout Malcolm Mitchell. Off-season acquisition Brandin Cooks could be inserted in some snaps, but don’t expect much action or numbers yet.
Who the backfield will feature the most is a question mark, although any of the seven RBs on the roster could benefit well from the Pats’ unpredictable running schemes – team newbies Miles Gillislee ad Rex Burkehead should be the most interesting.
As for the defense, it’s also deemed to remain disruptive. The list of starters will also be filled with guys that are still trying to move up in the depth charts, which should include rookies Derek Rivers and Deatrich Wise, among others.
