Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (+15.5)
Regular Season Record: 2-13
The Jaguars’ losing skid has reached seven games after they fell prey to the New York Jets on the road in Week 16 to the tune of a 26-21 score. Trevor Lawrence also failed to snap his drought of passing touchdown-less games, but he still looked good in the loss. Lawrence passed for 280 yards on 26/39 completions while also avoiding an interception. He will need to do more with his arm going forward after it was revealed that running back James Robinson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. Veteran wide receivers Marvin Jones Jr. and Tavon Austin should expect heavier workloads as well, following the James Robinson news, while Dare Ogunbowale will now be the lead running back for the Jaguars, who have seen the total hit the under in six of their past 10 games away from Jacksonville.
Betting on the New England Patriots (-15.5)
Regular Season Record: 9-6
The Patriots are cooling off at a bad time. After winning seven games in a row, Bill Belichick’s team has lost two of its last two games to the Indianapolis Colts on the road (27-17) in Week 15 and to the Buffalo Bills (33-21) at home in Week 16. The Patriots need something to boost their ego, and a game against the lowly Jaguars is a perfect source of a confidence-builder for New England. The Jags are arguably the worst team in the NFL right now. Stopping Jacksonville’s inept offense should be child’s play for the Patriots, who owns the top scoring defense in the NFL. Lawrence’s streak of games without a passing touchdown is not a good bet to end in Week 17, considering that the Patriots have one of the most vicious pass defenses in the NFL.
The Patriots are 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 games after a double-digit loss at home.
Writer’s Prediction
The Patriots win, 33-14.
