Betting on the Washington Redskins (+1)

The Redskins were mediocre in 2016 (8-7-1, third in the NFC East) despite a solid year from Kirk Cousins, so they did what was supposed to be done and recharged mostly on defense.

Their desire on bulking up the stop unit was evident when they used their first three picks in the draft on defensive players (Linebackers Robert Allen and Ryan Anderson and Cornerback Fabian Moreau) and having three of their most expensive signings in the off-season on the same type of players (Defensive tackles Stacy McGee and Terrell McClain and safety DJ Swearinger). All six could see action this Thursday, alongside the other regular guys in the rotation.

On offense, the quarterback duties will likely be split by veteran back-up Colt McCoy and second-year pro Nate Sudfeld, who were both on the bench in all of last season. The two, however, have shown they can perform well when called upon, particularly McCoy, as he owns a 70.5 completion percentage and a 5-3 touchdown-interception ratio in six games with the ‘Skins.

Quarterback-turned-wide receiver Terrelle Pryor is a Redskin worthy of the spolight this preseason (and possibly the regular season as well), since he is coming off a breakout year with the Cleveland Browns. He racked up 1,000-plus yards and four TDs in 2016.

Betting on the Baltimore Ravens (-1)

The Ravens a rarity in this preseason, as they will be parading a QB that will likely be their starter once the official action begins. Ryan Mallet, as you may know, is the team’s projected number one play-caller on the chart come kickoff time, with Joe Flacco nursing an injured back.

Mallet is in his third year in Baltimore, so familiarity with the schemes and verbiage shouldn’t be a problem. However, do note that he’s only 61-for-103 (59.2 percent) with a 2-3 TD-INT ratio in six games with the group. Also, as a career back-up, the 29-year-old will be handed a heavy task, even if the coming tests are just exhibition games.

Co-journeymen Dustin Vaughn and Josh Woodrum will play behind Mallet. The three QBs will most likely have Breshad Perriman and Chris Moore, among others, on the wing, and should sparingly see new one-two punch of Mike Wallace and new Raven Jeremy Maclin.

The defense, meanwhile, will have a better assurance. Although leaders CJ Mosley and Terrell Suggs are not expected to step into the field, the Ravens – like the ‘Skins – also boosted their D by mostly drafting (Marlon Humphrey, Tyus Bowser, etc.) and signing (Brandon Carr and Tony Jefferson) defensive guys.
