Betting on the Pittsburgh Steelers (+3)
Though the game will be mostly played by guys that are deep in the depth charts, there’s a lot to look forward to on the Steelers. Their offense, in particular, is still one of the game’s most dangerous.
Ben Roethlisberger won’t appear in much snaps, and it’s Landry Jones and rookies Joshua Dobbs and Bart Houston that are expected to enter the field. All back-ups should be interesting, particularly Jones and Dobbs, as they are basically trying out to be the new franchise quarterback once Big Ben hangs it up.
The QBs will also have nice weapons at their disposal. On the receiving side, they’ll possibly have the returning Martavis Bryant (suspended) and rookie Juju Smith-Schuster, among others, while on the backfield, it will be Knile Davis and Fitzgerald Touissant.
The defense are parading rookies and second/third-stringers as well. It should be led by two of their top three picks in this year’s draft – linebacker TJ Watt and cornerback Cameron Sutton.
Betting on the New York Giants (-3)
Like the Steelers, the Giants are also boasting some interesting additions on offense. It’s generating intrigue around the team since their defense was already good last season, as it allowed the second-fewest points in the league (17.8 per game).
We won’t be seeing a whole lot of the real starters – as you may have guessed by now – but we should be able to glimpse most of the rookies and other rotation guys. The quarterbacking duties, for one, will be split by veterans Josh Johnson and Geno Smith, along with rookie Davis Webb, with official starter Eli Manning possibly sitting out a big majority of the preseason.
The receiving corps of the QBs for the game will likely be led by rookie tight end Evan Engram, who possesses good speed, hands, and aggression for the ball – Odell Beckham and new Giant Brandon Marshall are not expected to play. Over at the backfield, Paul Perkins, Orleans Darkwa, and rookie Wayne Gallman are the guys to watch out for.
Fourth-year pro Jay Bromley and rookie pass-rushers Dalvin Tomlinson and Avery Moss, meanwhile, will be among the key guys on defense. Bromley, a defensive tackle, has played mostly on special teams since being drafted, and he’s looking to finally lock a spot as a starter.
