Betting on the Chattanooga Moccasins (0-1)

A 27-13 loss to the Jacksonville State Gamecocks shows that the Chattanooga Mocs still have a long way to go before being considered as a real contender in Division I-AA.

Backup quarterback Nick Tiano played well against JSU in place of Chattanooga’s supposed and suspended starting QB, Alejandro Bennifield. Tiano finished with 218 passing yards and gained 68 more on the ground, and he’ll need to exceed that output with this Saturday’s trip to The Bayou on tap.

That’s really easier said than done, though, as the Mocs do not fare well against FBS teams in general. They’ve actually lost five-straight road games against those more-reputable programs (2-3 ATS), and LSU definitely belongs in that upper tier of competition.

Betting on the LSU Tigers (1-0)

The LSU Tigers are off to an impressive start to their season, shutting out the BYU Cougars in Week 1, 27-0.

Even without stud running back Leonard Fournette running the show in the backfield, LSU’s rushing attack appears to not have lost a step with Derrius Guice now in Fournette’s place. Guice trampled the Cougars for 120 yards on the ground along with two scores, and he should have no problem producing similar if not better numbers against the Mocs.

Above all else, the Tigers’ dominant performance on defense from Week 1 is what makes them such a lock for another blowout victory this weekend. Although Chattanooga will likely gain more than the 97 offensive yards that BYU mustered up, LSU’s D is simply too good to allow an upset from happening on home field.

Quarterback play hasn’t been an issue for the Tigers yet either, as Danny Etling went an efficient 14-of-17 passing for 171 yards against the Cougars. For as long as Etling stays away from being too flashy in the air and leaves matters to the ground attack, the Tigers should keep their current 7-0 home record against unranked teams (5-2 ATS) intact when all is said and done.

Writer’s Prediction

Another convincing win for LSU, 31-9.
