The Mercer Bears suffered their first defeat of the season in disheartening fashion; a 28-27 loss to Southern Conference rivals, the Wofford Terriers.
Despite what the final score may indicate, the Bears didn’t really play good football this past weekend. The same could be said about their quarterback Kaelan Riley, who finished with 167 yards through the air, two passing touchdowns and another TD on the ground, but did so by making just 14 of his 28 pass attempts and throwing three picks along the way.
Mercer’s defense didn’t have much luck either. The team’s stop unit forced two fumbles out of their opponent yet failed to recover neither of those opportunities. The Terriers also ended up with 367 offensive yards en route to victory.
Up next for the Bears is an even steeper challenge: a trip to The Jungle of Auburn. Expect the boys from Macon to be in for another major letdown.

Speaking of letdowns, the No. 15 Auburn Tigers took a rough loss this past Saturday as well, falling 14-6 to the No. 3 Clemson Tigers.
Quarterback Jarrett Stidham had to endure his outing start under center, going 13-of-24 for merely 79 passing yards. To make matters worse, Stidham also ran the ball 18 times, only to end up with negative-42 rushing yards.
But unlike Mercer, Auburn’s defense had a more spirited performance in the loss. That D still managed to hold Clemson to under 300 yards on offense and also recovered both of their two forced fumbles.
Do note that the Tigers entered their game against the cats from South Carolina with a massive 41-7 victory in Week 1 over Georgia Southern; a subpar mid-major program from Division I-A.
With a home game against the FCS’ Mercer Bears on tap, count on a bounce-back, blowout victory from an Auburn squad looking to mend its wounds. The Tigers have won six-straight games in Jordan-Hare Stadium (4-1-1 ATS), with the team scoring 55 or more points in three of those six contests.
Writer’s Prediction
The Tigers ravage the Bears, 48-10.
