Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (72-75)
The vacation-bound Orioles lost the series-opener on Thursday night, 13-5. It was the most runs they have given up in a game since June 23rd, and they have also lost seven of their last eight contests.
We may see the skid continue tomorrow, with probable starter Gabriel Ynoa not posing any real threat. The second-year pitcher currently has a 1-1 card with a 4.19 ERA, but the O’s have been defeated in his last five appearances in the mound. Further, he has allowed nine runs on 24 hits and three walks in 19.1 total innings this year, while only striking out 15.
The batting will be about Adam Jones, the team’s most effective hitter in the past week and all-season against Yankees. He’s 10-for-27 with a pair of runs and RBIs in the last seven days, and he has gone 18-for-55 with one homer and seven RBIs versus the Yanks this 2017.
The O’s are 6-10 against the Yankees this season.
Betting on the New York Yankees (80-66)
The Yankees’ wildcard slot is all but locked (four games ahead), so they are more relaxed than most teams as the season is winding down. Thursday’s high-scoring win indicated as such, as they recorded their second 10-plus run performance this week. It was also their 10th win in 14 games.
Luis Severino will be returning to the field to help the Yanks pile up more victories. The 23-year-old is 12-6 with a 2.96 ERA on the year, and he has only given up one run in six of his last eight starts. Friday will be his fourth meeting with the Orioles this season, a team where he has allowed six runs on 15 hits and four walks across 18.1 innings, while having 22 Ks. Baltimore’s current roster is 25-for-121 against him all-time (.207).
Offensively, the three Yankees to watch out for are Brett Gardner, Gary Sanchez, and Didi Gregorius. Each are over .320 in batting in the past week, and they combine for three homers and 15 RBIs.
Aaron Judge is far from his lava-like batting early in the year, but he just had a big day and his numbers against Baltimore are still impressive – 25-for-52, with 11 dingers and 24 RBIs in 16 games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Yanks (-250) get it, 8-3.
