Betting on the Green Bay Packers (5-8-1)
First of all, for bettors looking to lay money on the Packers for this weekend’s game at East Rutherford, they should monitor the status of Aaron Rodgers. Not that Rodgers is hurt currently has a personal issue, but the Packers might opt to sit him out since the team has nothing to play for – except for pride. The Packers have officially been eliminated from playoff contention after a 24-17 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field last Sunday, so talks of shutting down Rodgers is swirling. That said, the initial feel is that the Packers are going to let Rodgers play. What’s certain is that they will not have running back Aaron Jones leading their ground attack, as he has been placed on the injured reserve Tuesday due to a knee injury. That means a likely feature-back job for Jamaal Williams at least against the Jets, whose run defense could be porous enough for him to abuse repeatedly. The Jets are allowing 125.9 rushing yards per game.
The under is 4-1 in the Packers’ last five road games.
Betting on the New York Jets (4-10)
The only thing that keeps the Jets worth watching this late in the season is rookie quarterback Sam Darnold. It’s intriguing and fun at the same time seeing how his development as an NFL signal-caller progresses each passing week, and he’s got a good chance of going to the next level this weekend against the Packers. Although Green Bay has a decent defense that can contain opposing attacks, Darnold can be a bit dangerous, considering he’s riding some nice momentum. In Week 15, Darnold passed the test against the Houston Texans’ high-pressure defense, throwing for 253 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions on 24-of-38 completions, albeit in a 29-22 home loss. He did get sacked three times for a loss of 25 yards, though, so the Jets’ offensive line will have to tighten up the team’s pass protection to keep the only person making them watchable do his job seamlessly. The Jets are also hoping wide receiver Robby Anderson can continue his nice rapport with Darnold after he had 96 receiving yards and a touchdown on seven catches and 11 targets against Houston.
The over is 5-1 in the Jets’ last six home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Green Bay wins, 27-23.
