Betting on the Carolina Panthers (4-2)

The Panthers have yet to determine a date of return to action for Cam Newton, but based on how the team is playing in the quarterback’s absence, there’s likely no need to rush him back. The Panthers scored their fourth-straight win in Week 6, 37-26, over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road to send them into a bye in Week 7 feeling good about themselves. Kyle Allen has been a steadying presence for the Panthers. Allen doesn’t have the makeup of a superstar quarterback, but he’s getting the job done. Allen had 227 passing yards and two touchdowns while completing 20 of 32 passes against Tampa Bay. Running back Christian McCaffrey had a quiet game with just 31 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, but he’ll always be a factor for the Panthers’ offense that is averaging 27.7 points per game and 1.7 rushing touchdowns per contest, fifth and first in the NFL overall, respectively.

The Panthers are 4-0 against the spread (ATS) in their last four road games.

Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (6-0)

It wasn’t the sexiest of wins, but the 49ers would take victories any way they can, as they defeated the Washington Redskins on Sunday, 9-0. The low-scoring game was largely due to a rainy atmosphere, which belied how capable San Francisco’s offense is. Jimmy Garoppolo went just 12 for 21 for 151 yards with zero touchdowns and an interception. The Niners need better and consistent play from Garoppolo, as they can’t just rely too much on their rushing attack. That being said, the 49ers’ deep backfield is a big reason for their success. San Francisco is rushing the ball for 172.7 yards per game, second overall in the league. Another key to the Niners’ streak is their defense that is allowing just 10.7 points per game. The Redskins are a bad offensive team, but the Niners made sure Washington looked worse. The 49ers didn’t really need rain to help them slow down Washington, but that’s an alibi for the Redskins to use.

The 49ers are 3-2 ATS in their last five games as the home team.

Writer’s Prediction

The Panthers win, 23-22, and end the 49ers undefeated streak.
