These Aztecs are kind of a great basketball team, huh. The Aztecs added another win to their already impressive March Madness resume by scoring a dominant 82-59 win at home over the New Mexico Lobos last Sunday. Matt Mitchell led the team with 22 points, while Yanni Wetzel pumped out 20 points for the Aztecs, who finished the game with 10 3-pointers and a 45.3 percent shooting clip from the field. It’s not all sunshine for the Aztecs, as they committed 15 turnovers, but that three fewer than what they forced New Mexico to come up with. Defense has been a bread and butter for the Aztecs, who own the fourth-best scoring defense in the nation, allowing only 58.4 points per game. When the Aztecs beat Boise State at home back in January, 83-65), they took a 23-point lead at the half and coasted to an easy win, only allowing Boise State to inflate its point total by letting them go wild in a lengthy garbage time.

After seeing their five-game winning streak get snapped last Saturday in a 70-61 road loss to the Utah State Aggies, the Broncos got back on their feet and trampled on the Air Force Falcons in a 74-57 home win last Tuesday. Boise State was led to the win by Justinian Jessup, who powered his team with 18 points with three 3-pointers in 34 minutes. Two other players also scored at least 15 points for the Broncos team that’s 40th in the nation in scoring with an average of 75.8 points per game. The Broncos have players to threaten San Diego State on offense, but first the team will have to work harder in securing the ball — and protecting it. As mentioned earlier, the Broncos had 18 turnovers in the loss to the Aztecs. They tied with the Aztecs in rebounding, 29-29, but they wasted plenty of those possessions by giving the leather back to San Diego State multiple times. Broncos leading scorer Derrick Alston is averaging 18.4 points per game, while Jessup is putting up 15.7 per outing, but the two combined for a mere 16 points on 6-of-21 shooting from the field against San Diego State. The Aztecs’ defense were really on them hard, and will likely be the case again in the rematch, so others will have to step up and carry the scoring load for the Broncos.
