Betting on the New Orleans Saints (-5.5)
Regular Season Record: 1-0
The Saints showed Tom Brady that the NFC South is still their division, as they defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1, 34-30. New Orleans’ stop unit made life hard for Brady, who got picked twice and was sacked three times for a loss of 15 yards. On the ground, the Saints allowed just 86 rushing yards on 26 carries by Tampa Bay. The Saints will have their hands full agains the run with Josh Jacobs testing them, but the Saints are still very much capable of slowing down Las Vegas’ rushing attacks with the talent they have up front and in the secondary. Drew Brees could be without his best target in Week 2, as wide receiver Michael Thomas is trending towards missing the Raiders game due to an ankle injury. With or without Thomas, the Saints can overcome Las Vegas’ defense with Jared Cook, Alvin Kamara, Emmanuel Sanders, and Tre’Quan Smith downfield.
The Saints are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games.
Betting on the Las Vegas Raiders (+5.5)
Regular Season Record: 1-0
Jon Gruden compared Raiders running back Josh Jacobs to Hall of Famer Walter Payton following Las Vegas’ 34-30 road win in Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers. Many wouldn’t buy that Jacobs is now on the level of Sweetness, but what’s undeniable is that the Alabama product wowed last week, rushing for 93 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, while also getting involved in the passing game he had four catches turned into 46 receiving yards. Also impressive in that game was rookie Henry Ruggs III, who had 55 receiving yards on just three catches. However, Ruggs might not be able to play against the Saints, as he’s already missed a couple of practice this week due to a knee injury. If Ruggs would sit out Monday’s game and Thomas does the same, that should be a net plus for the Raiders. Jacobs could also outplay Alvin Kamara, who only had 16 rushing yards on 12 carries against the Bucs.
The Raiders are 3-0 against the spread in their last three games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Saints win, 27-23.
