For the first time in 33 years, the Indiana Hoosiers managed to beat the Michigan Wolverines. The signs are coming together to point to greater success in the coming weeks for the surging Hoosiers, but they can’t afford to be overconfident when they meet the struggling, but still dangerous, Michigan State Spartans in East Lansing this coming weekend.

The Hoosiers are for real, and it’s time to take them seriously, as they have done enough so far this season to warrant respect. A couple of weeks after stunning the college football world with an upset win over then-No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions in overtime, the Hoosiers victimized No. 23 Michigan State at home to the tune of a 38-21 score. Sandwiched in between those wins was another victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at home, 37-21. Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. led a balanced attack by the Hoosiers in the Michigan game, as he passed for 342 yards and three touchdowns without an interception on 30-of-50 completions, while Stevie Scott III rushed 24 times for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Indiana is not as explosive as the other top teams on either side of the field, but the Hoosiers are playing efficient football. They entered Saturday’s game against Michigan second in the nation with a turnover margin per game of 2.0. They intercepted Michigan quarterback Joe Milton twice to improve their total to five in three games. Meanwhile, Michigan State is prone to turnovers and just had three last Saturday against the Iowa Hawkeyes. Indiana can look to force more turnovers against that Spartans team that is currently bumbling.
Indiana is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 games overall, dating back to last season.
Betting on the Michigan State Spartans (+7.5)
Record: 1-2 Overall / 1-2 Conference
Much was expected from quarterback Ricky Lombardi in last Saturday’s showdown with the Iowa Hawkeyes, but he simply didn’t have it, as he had a terrible performance in an embarrassing 49-7 road loss. Lombardi threw for 227 passing yards with zero touchdowns and three interceptions on 17-of-37 completions. However, that didn’t stop Jalen Nailor from putting up a show. The wide receiver had 119 receiving yards on just four receptions for a 29.8 yards per catch average. Nailor is always a big-play threat, and if Lombardi can get back to his great form in previous games, Michigan State can have fun again on offense at the expense of Indiana’s defense. Lombardi didn’t look healthy in the loss to Iowa, which may very well explain his bombing out in that game. Still, his status should be monitored closely in the coming days. Based on the fact that he was let to finish the game, it appears that Lombardi will just be fine for next week’s date with Indiana.
Since 1998, the Spartans are 8-2 against the spread in their last 10 home games against the Hoosiers. Last year, the Spartans defeated Indiana in East Lansing, 40-31.
Writer’s Prediction
Indiana wins, 33-30.
