Betting on the Clemson Tigers (-21.5)

Record: 8-1 Overall / 7-1 Conference

In probably his last game in Death Valley, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence sure made it memorable, as he passed for 403 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-37 completions during the Tigers’ 52-17 home win over the Pittsburgh Panthers last Saturday. That was also Lawrence’s first game back from COVID-19, showing no signs of rust at all. Lawrence will have a chance of dressing down Virginia Tech’s defense next week, one that allowed the same Panthers team to rack up over 400 yards two weeks ago. Clemson is averaging 44.9 points per game and 517.7 total yards per contest, seventh and 10th in the nation, respectively. On defense, Clemson looked arguably sharper in the Pittsburgh game, as the Tigers had four interceptions and six sacks. That doesn’t sound comforting for the Hokies, who turned the ball over twice in their most recent game.

Clemson is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 games on the road.

Betting on the Virginia Tech Hokies (+21.5)

Record: 4-5 Overall / 4-4 Conference

The Hokies had a bye last week, which came at just the right time. Before taking that extra week of rest, the Hokies lost to the Panthers on the road, 47-14 on Nov. 21 for their third loss in a row. Prior to that, they dropped close ones to the Miami Hurricanes (25-24) and to the Liberty Flames (38-25) both at home. As mentioned earlier, turnovers helped kill Virginia Tech’s chances of winning against Pittsburgh, but the Hokies aren’t really that careless of a team this season offensively. In fact, the Hokies entered Week 13 of the season with a +0.4 turnover margin per game and 1.1 giveaways per contest. Up against Clemson’s stout defense, don’t expect Virginia Tech to try anything cute by making a departure from their strength, which is running the ball. The Hokies, who rushed for 156 yards on 37 carries against Pittsburgh, is No. 1 in the ACC in rushing yards per game and rushing yards per carry. Clemson’s defense got gashed for 230 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 24 carries by Pittsburgh last week, so Virginia Tech should be sensing it’s got a chance to upset the Tigers through smashmouth football.

Virginia Tech is 4-2 against the spread in its last six home games.

Writer’s Prediction

Clemson wins, 44-23.
